The Path that Leads to Grace

Yesterday, I watched a video of Jim Carrey, speaking at a ministry to former inmates in LA.*

He said, “I believe suffering leads to salvation, in fact, it’s the only way.  We have to somehow accept, not deny and feel our suffering and feel our losses.  And then we make one of two decisions…walk through the gate of vengeance, which leads to resentment, which leads to self-harm, which leads to harm to others.  Or we go through the gate of forgiveness which leads to grace."

After watching Jim share his heart, I realized for the 1st time in the 19 years that I’ve been following Jesus and seeking God that there is a path to grace just like there is a path to destruction.  In the first chapter of James, the scripture says, “Desire when it has conceived, brings forth sin, and sin when it is fully grown, brings forth death.”  (James 1)

I believe what Jim Carrey said here is true, if we take the example of Jesus…and we are willing to receive his power to look at the people who caused our suffering (even if we’re looking in the mirror),with compassion and forgiveness, it leads to grace and opens the gates of heaven for all of us.
